Cove ceiling construction has gotten complicated with all the radius options, framing techniques, and finishing methods flying around. Framing Methods
That’s what makes proper framing endearing to us finish carpenters:
- Blocking: Solid wood backing shaped to radius
- Flexible Track: Metal track bent to desired curve
- Prefabricated Cove: Ready-made radius pieces
Drywall Application
- Use thinner drywall (1/4″) for tighter curves
- Wet paper face to increase flexibility
- Apply gradually, securing as you go
- Double-layer for durability
Finishing
- Apply flexible corner bead if needed
- Multiple thin coats of compound
- Sand carefully to maintain curve profile
- Prime and paint for uniform finish
