Mineral Spirits Drying Time
Solvent drying has gotten complicated with all the ventilation factors, temperature variables, and application thicknesses flying around. As someone who has used mineral spirits for every finishing task, I learned everything there is to know about proper drying times. Today, I will share it all with you.
Typical Drying Times
Probably should have led with this section, honestly—drying varies significantly by conditions:
- Light application: 15-30 minutes
- Heavy application: 1-2 hours
- Before painting/staining: 24 hours minimum
Factors Affecting Drying
That’s what makes understanding variables endearing to us finishers:
- Temperature: Warmer = faster evaporation
- Humidity: Lower humidity = faster drying
- Ventilation: Better airflow = faster drying
- Application Thickness: Thinner = faster
Best Practices
- Ensure adequate ventilation during and after use
- Apply thin coats when cleaning
- Allow extra time in cool or humid conditions
- Test dryness before applying finishes
Safety Considerations
- Flammable until fully evaporated
- Work in well-ventilated areas
- Store soaked rags properly to prevent combustion
- Keep away from ignition sources
