What Are Rim Joists?

Probably should have led with this section, honestly—rim joists are the outermost joists sitting on top of the foundation. They run around the perimeter of your floor framing, sealing the ends of floor joists. Many homes, especially older ones, have little to no insulation here, causing significant air leakage and cold spots.

Material Options

That’s what makes material selection endearing to us energy-efficiency builders—each has distinct advantages:

  • Spray Foam: Excellent air sealing and insulation. Closed-cell also acts as vapor barrier. More expensive but most effective.
  • Rigid Foam Board: Good air infiltration barrier with solid insulating properties. Cut to fit between joists, seal edges with caulk or foam.
  • Fiberglass Batts: Most affordable but less effective at preventing air infiltration. Can absorb moisture in damp areas.

Installation Steps

  1. Preparation: Remove old insulation, clean area, check for mold or moisture damage
  2. Measure and Cut: Measure width and height of each cavity, cut insulation to size
  3. Install: Place insulation snugly in each cavity. For rigid foam, seal edges with caulk or foam
  4. Seal Gaps: Use caulk or spray foam to seal remaining gaps, especially around penetrations
  5. Inspect: Check for missed spots and adjust as needed
