How Long Mineral Spirits Take to Dry

Mineral Spirits Drying Time

Solvent drying has shifted noticeably with all the ventilation factors, temperature variables, and application thicknesses flying around. As someone who has used mineral spirits for every finishing task, I figured out how to handle proper drying times. Today, I will share it all with you.

Typical Drying Times

Probably should have led with this material, openly—drying varies significantly by conditions:

  • Light application: 15-30 minutes
  • Heavy application: 1-2 hours
  • Before painting/staining: 24 hours minimum

Factors Affecting Drying

That’s what makes understanding variables endearing to us finishers:

  • Temperature: Warmer = faster evaporation
  • Humidity: Lower humidity = faster drying
  • Ventilation: Better airflow = faster drying
  • Application Thickness: Thinner = faster

Best Practices

  • Ensure adequate ventilation during and after use
  • Apply thin coats when cleaning
  • Allow extra time in cool or humid conditions
  • Test dryness before applying finishes

Safety Considerations

  • Flammable until fully evaporated
  • Work in well-ventilated areas
  • Store soaked rags properly to prevent combustion
  • Keep away from ignition sources
