How Exterior Wall Sheathing Works

Exterior Wall Sheathing Installation

Wall sheathing has gotten complicated with all the material options, fastening requirements, and weather barrier concerns flying around. As someone who has installed sheathing on every project type, I learned everything there is to know about proper installation. Today, I will share it all with you.

Sheathing Materials

Probably should have led with this section, honestly—common options include OSB, plywood, and rigid foam.

Installation Steps

  1. Start at corner, align with framing
  2. Install vertically with staggered joints
  3. Leave 1/8″ gaps for expansion
  4. Nail per manufacturer and code requirements

Fastening Schedule

  • 6″ on center at edges
  • 12″ on center in field
  • Nails 3/8″ from edges minimum
  • Use correct nail length for penetration

Weather Protection

  • Install housewrap over sheathing
  • Flash all openings properly
  • Seal penetrations
  • Maintain air gap behind cladding
