Grounding Main Panel

Electrical grounding has gotten complicated with all the code requirements, bonding specifications, and electrode types flying around. As someone who has worked on electrical systems throughout my career, I learned everything there is to know about proper grounding. Today, I will share it all with you.

Why Grounding Matters

Probably should have led with this section, honestly—grounding provides a safe path for fault current and protects against electrical shock.

Grounding Components

• Grounding Electrode: Connection to earth (rod, plate, or Ufer)
• Grounding Conductor: Wire connecting panel to electrode
• Bonding: Connecting metal components together

Code Requirements

• Ground rods minimum 8 feet deep
• Supplemental electrode often required
• Proper sizing of grounding conductors
• Bonding of water pipes and gas lines

Main Panel Specifics

• Neutral and ground bonded at main panel only
• Grounding bar connection to enclosure
• Continuous path to grounding electrodes
• Sub-panels keep neutral and ground separate
