Teflon Paste vs Tape – Which Seals Better?

Teflon Paste vs Tape

Pipe thread sealing has gotten complicated with all the product options, application methods, and compatibility concerns flying around. As someone who has sealed every type of threaded connection, I learned everything there is to know about choosing the right sealant. Today, I will share it all with you.

Basic Differences

Probably should have led with this section, honestly—tape wraps around threads while paste is applied directly.

When to Use Tape

  • Clean, undamaged threads
  • Low to moderate pressure applications
  • Water supply connections
  • When you need clean removal later

When to Use Paste

  • Gas line connections (approved types)
  • Larger or damaged threads
  • High-pressure applications
  • When filling thread gaps

Application Tips

  • Tape: Wrap clockwise (3-5 wraps), stretched tight
  • Paste: Apply liberally to male threads only
  • Clean threads before application
  • Don’t over-tighten—sealant does the work
