  4. Inspect rough opening for damage

Materials Needed

  • Pre-hung exterior door

  • Screws and nails
  • Weatherstripping and sealant
  • Threshold
  • Level and tape measure

Installation Steps

  1. Apply sealant to subfloor where threshold sits
  2. Set door in opening and check fit
  3. Insert shims at hinge locations
  4. Verify level and plumb
  5. Secure hinges with screws
  6. Shim and secure latch side
  7. Check door operation
  8. Install lockset and deadbolt
  9. Apply exterior trim and caulk

Weatherproofing

  • Install proper weatherstripping around frame
  • Ensure threshold creates tight seal
  • Apply caulk at exterior trim joints
  • Use flashing tape above door

Common Issues

  • Door doesn’t close properly: Check plumb and adjust shims
  • Air leaks: Add or adjust weatherstripping
