Shower Curb Width for a Safe Design

Shower Curb Width Guide

Shower curb design has changed quite a bit thanks to the code requirements, accessibility concerns, and waterproofing methods flying around. As someone who has built shower curbs in every configuration, I worked through the fundamentals of proper dimensions. Today, I will share it all with you.

Standard Dimensions

Probably should have led in this case, candidly—typical curb width ranges from 3 to 5 inches, with 4 inches being most common.

Factors Affecting Width

  • Door type (hinged vs. sliding)
  • Accessibility requirements
  • Tile size for top surface
  • Waterproofing membrane needs

Height Requirements

  • Standard: 2-4 inches above shower floor
  • ADA compliant: Maximum 1/2 inch (barrier-free preferred)
  • Sloped for drainage toward shower

Construction Tips

  • Use waterproof curb material or properly waterproof wood framing
  • Slope top toward shower drain
  • Ensure waterproof membrane wraps over curb
  • Allow for tile thickness on all surfaces
