Can You Use Roofing Nails for Siding?

Fastener selection has gotten complicated with all the material specifications, code requirements, and corrosion concerns flying around. As someone who has installed siding with every fastener type, I learned everything there is to know about proper nail selection. Today, I will share it all with you.

The Short Answer

Probably should have led with this section, honestly—while roofing nails can technically hold siding, they’re generally not the best choice.

Why Siding Nails Differ

  • Larger head for holding power without pull-through
  • Proper length for sheathing penetration
  • Corrosion resistance for exposed conditions
  • Designed for specific siding material

Proper Siding Fasteners

  • Vinyl Siding: Aluminum or galvanized, 3/8″ head minimum
  • Wood Siding: Stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized
  • Fiber Cement: Manufacturer-specified nails or screws

Code Requirements

  • Minimum penetration into framing
  • Corrosion resistance specifications
  • Head size requirements
  • Check manufacturer specs for warranty compliance
