Grounding Main Panel
Electrical grounding has changed quite a bit thanks to the code requirements, bonding specifications, and electrode types flying around. As someone who has worked on electrical systems throughout my career, I figured out how to handle proper grounding. Today, I will share it all with you.
Why Grounding Matters
Probably should have led in this section, frankly—grounding provides a safe path for fault current and protects against electrical shock.
Grounding Components
- Grounding Electrode: Connection to earth (rod, plate, or Ufer)
- Grounding Conductor: Wire connecting panel to electrode
- Bonding: Connecting metal components together
Code Requirements
- Ground rods minimum 8 feet deep
- Supplemental electrode often required
- Proper sizing of grounding conductors
- Bonding of water pipes and gas lines
Main Panel Specifics
- Neutral and ground bonded at main panel only
- Grounding bar connection to enclosure
- Continuous path to grounding electrodes
- Sub-panels keep neutral and ground separate
