A typical finished shower curb is about 4½ to 6 inches wide, but building codes generally do not prescribe one universal curb width. The correct width comes from the curb substrate, waterproofing system, tile thickness, and shower-door hardware. Measure the finished assembly—not only the framing—and follow the shower-system and enclosure manufacturers’ instructions.
For many site-built curbs, a 2×4 laid flat starts at 3½ inches before backer, membrane, mortar, and tile are added. That often produces a finished curb around 4½ to 5½ inches wide. Prefabricated foam curbs and masonry curbs can finish differently, so “standard width” is a planning range rather than a code number.

These ranges are design examples, not permission to ignore local requirements. Your adopted plumbing/building code, approved plans, product instructions, and inspector control the project.
Does code specify shower curb width?
The 2021 International Residential Code section P2709.1 addresses shower-receptor construction. For a receptor with a finished curb, it regulates the vertical depth measured from the top of the curb to the top of the drain and the slope of the finished shower floor. It does not establish a general finished curb-width dimension.
The U.S. Access Board’s ADA bathing-room guidance is equally explicit for accessible shower thresholds: threshold height and edge profile are regulated, but no threshold width is specified. ADA rules do not automatically govern every private single-family bathroom; accessible projects may also be subject to adopted building-code provisions such as ICC A117.1. Ask the authority having jurisdiction which rules apply.

How to calculate finished curb width
Start with the actual substrate width, then add every layer on both faces:
Finished width = substrate + inside build-up + outside build-up.
Each side’s build-up can include an approved panel or mortar layer, waterproofing, thin-set mortar, and tile. Do not assume every assembly uses cement board or that fasteners are permitted on every curb face. Traditional liner systems and bonded waterproofing systems have different details.
For example, a 3½-inch substrate with approximately ½ inch of approved finish build-up on each side would finish near 4½ inches. That is only an estimating example. Confirm actual product thicknesses and installation tolerances before ordering a glass enclosure or cutting a curb cap.
Width requirements for a shower door
The shower enclosure can be the deciding factor. A frameless glass installer needs enough flat, properly sloped surface for the channel, clips, or hinges specified by that enclosure manufacturer. The curb must also align with the wall and door opening.
- Choose the enclosure before finalizing the curb.
- Give the glass installer the finished curb dimensions, not framing dimensions.
- Keep planned anchors compatible with the waterproofing system.
- Do not drill into a completed curb until the enclosure and waterproofing manufacturers’ instructions confirm the permitted location and sealing method.
A wider curb is not automatically safer. Excess width consumes shower or bathroom floor space, and any horizontal tiled surface must be detailed to direct water inward.
Waterproofing and slope matter more than an extra inch
Use one complete, compatible shower system. Do not combine pieces from unrelated methods unless the manufacturers approve the assembly. The waterproofing should connect continuously between the receptor, curb, and walls according to that system’s instructions.
The tiled curb top should shed water toward the shower, not the bathroom. Establish the required pitch in the substrate or approved assembly rather than trying to create it only with a thick layer of setting mortar. Protect the waterproofing from unapproved penetrations.
Schluter, for example, directs installers to seal its prefabricated KERDI-BOARD curb to the shower base and walls with its specified waterproofing bands and corners. That detail applies to the named system; other manufacturers have their own tested instructions.

Width versus height: do not mix the measurements
- Width runs from the bathroom side to the shower side.
- Curb-to-drain depth is a vertical measurement from the top of the finished curb to the top of the drain.
- Threshold height describes the step or change in level at the entry.
- Shower-floor slope directs water toward the drain.

Accessible and curbless showers
For an ADA-compliant roll-in or transfer shower, section 608.7 generally limits the threshold to ½ inch. Edges and bevels must comply with the applicable provisions, and the entire shower—including size, clearances, controls, grab bars, seat, floor slope, and enclosure—must be designed as a system. A low curb by itself does not make a shower accessible.
Curbless construction is easiest to plan before framing and drainage are fixed. It may require a recessed floor or engineered transition so the bathroom and shower can be waterproofed without an abrupt step. Bring the building official, designer, waterproofing manufacturer, and installer into the decision early.
Planning checklist
- Confirm the locally adopted code and any accessibility requirements.
- Select one complete shower receptor and waterproofing method.
- Select the door or glass system before locking the curb dimensions.
- Calculate the finished width from every specified layer.
- Coordinate the curb with the wall, opening, drain, and floor slope.
- Confirm permitted anchors and penetrations in writing.
- Follow required inspection and flood-test procedures before tile.
Bottom line: plan on roughly 4½ to 6 inches for many conventional finished curbs, but treat that as a common construction range—not a universal code rule. The approved assembly and enclosure determine the exact dimension.
