Choosing Between Rotary Hammer and Hammer Drill

Rotary Hammer vs Hammer Drill

Concrete drilling tool selection has changed quite a bit thanks to the mechanism differences, power levels, and application claims flying around. As someone who has drilled through every concrete type, I figured out how to handle choosing the right tool. Today, I will share it all with you.

Key Differences

Probably should have led in this case, candidly—hammer drills use a cam mechanism while rotary hammers use a piston-driven system.

Hammer Drill

  • Lighter and more versatile
  • Good for smaller holes in concrete
  • Also works as regular drill
  • Less expensive

Rotary Hammer

  • More powerful hammer action
  • Better for larger holes and heavy-duty work
  • Less user fatigue on big jobs
  • SDS chuck for quick bit changes

When to Choose Each

  • Hammer Drill: Light masonry, occasional concrete work
  • Rotary Hammer: Frequent concrete drilling, larger holes, demolition
