Start by diagnosing the existing room

Waterproofing and drainage
Tile and grout are finish materials, not a complete waterproofing strategy. The bathing assembly needs a compatible system for substrate, waterproofing, penetrations, transitions, drain connection and movement joints. The proposal should identify the system and installation standard rather than simply saying “tile shower.”
Document the assembly before it is covered. Product instructions, inspection records and photographs are valuable if a leak appears later.
Ventilation

Electrical and lighting

Design for the people who will use it

Build the budget by scope
A reliable budget includes design, permits, demolition, disposal, protection, framing, plumbing, electrical, ventilation, insulation, drywall, waterproofing, tile, fixtures, cabinetry, counters, flooring, paint, finish carpentry, cleanup and tax. Also include temporary bathing arrangements, storage, delivery and potential work in adjacent rooms.

The contract should name the waterproofing system, fixtures, finishes, responsibilities and change-order process. “Remodel bathroom” is not a workable scope. Tie payments to understandable progress and retain receipts, approvals, inspection records and product data.
Address older-home hazards
